Kingshall Herne Bay

Specialist valve refurbishment works

Client

Glenfield Invicta

Value

220k

Duration

16 weeks

Glendfield Invicta employed our services to carry out specialist valve refurbishment works located directly on the sea front at a coastal pumping station in Kingshall, Herne Bay. We carried out the removal of 4 DN 800 gate valves, 4 DN 800 non return valves, a DN1200 sea outfall gate valve removal and refurbishment, the under-pressure drilling of 4 pipe runs situated within a confined space chamber.

Our in-house engineering team designed and devised a specialist temporary works scheme for a bespoke lifting and moving frame to ensure the safe removal of each valve.

With each valve weighing approximately 2.8 tonnes, the frame had to be installed, tested and certified with permits to load prior to any valve removal.

The valves were then safely removed and skidded 5 metres into position beneath a lifting hole for crane removal.

Components were cleaned, shot blasted and re-coated all in-house. New mechanical parts and seals were then machined from new or procured where possible, before reassembly and testing prior to offering the client for acceptance.

Once accepted, the valves were then transported back to site, reinstalled using the same controlled lifting process as before, and monitored insitu for two weeks post-installation.

Due to the location’s sensitive environment and local public interface, planning of the project was key to success prior to any engagement on site. Works were carefully planned around tidal movements and weather conditions to prevent pollution to the surrounding ecological environment of the site, ensuring it remained clean and free from contamination. To ensure safe working conditions, we were responsible for implementing isolation procedures under SCO conditions, further preventing risk of spillage or pollution to the surrounding area.
