Balfour Beatty Rail engaged with us to support their project to strengthen and rehabilitate an existing rail bridge located in Paddington, Central London. We were contracted as part of the London Street project. Our scope included both fabrication of new steel sections and repairs to heavily corroded sections of the bridge.
The job required welding to existing steel dating from 1906. Knowing the risks that this poses, and following our Welding Quality Management System, we took samples of the existing steelwork and produced a job specific WPQR to guarantee the quality of our welding.
All fabrication was carried out in-house to Execution Class 3 including shotblasting and painting to Network Rail standards. In order to reduce issues on site in planning and implementation, LIDAR scanning was taken of the existing structure. This LIDAR scan was used to produce a 3D digital twin of the section of the bridge being repaired, and then used to plan all the fabrication drawings
The repairs themselves were all carried out behind the site hoardings (not trackside) by our skilled installation teams. The work included drilling and bolting of flange plates and splice plates using pre-loaded bolts (TCBs). Site welding was carried out on site by our team of coded welders and subjected to an NDT testing regime of 100% (MPI and Ultrasonic).
All elements were shotblasted and coated at our Kingsnorth facility and transported to site.
Works were successfully delivered in line with tight programme requirements.
